![]() I don't anticipate regularly using the emergency line, but I'm probably undersized on my return pump so the secondary gets used a bit to maintain water height in the display tank. Is it OK to just plumb my secondary and emergency to drop in the first chamber, or should I combine into a single intake pipe for the sump. The goal of my sump is increased tank volume, appropriate tank turnover and filtration. All the setups I have seen with BA piping, use three separate pipes, down into a sump that sits right under the tank. I was going to try the BA overflow, in hopes of keeping noise down. Main syphon, secondary open channel and emergency open channel. I have a header that drains down into the basement. You mention having 2, Im planning on a Bean Animal type with 3 three pipes. The new sump has a single intake primary intake. Good to know that the 1' overflows will be plenty. Thanks to WAMAS - I have procured an Aqueon Proflex sump. So normally you run it with the water about 1/2' down, just up to the top of the secondary drain (again, controlled by cranking down the gate valve on the full siphon). An overflow box is used to drain water from your display aquarium down into your sump or filtration system. The bean animal that came built into my tank has the secondary 1/2' down, emergency 1/4' down, and full siphon about 1.5' down. Even tanks with sumps that inject directly in to the tank will loose far more CO2 than tanks with canister filters. Herbie overflow method reef tank plumbing guide the herbie method can completely silence your aquarium drain and eliminate microbubbles. Sumps arent really the most efficient place to inject CO2, too much off gassing youll go through a lot of gas to get optimal conc in the tank. They are covered with slim profile filters (which I love), and thus I have no overflow.Ĭurrently, the primary outflow (which is partially restricted because my current return pump is a sissy), secondary, and emergency all empty individually into my hilljacked 20G high sump in the basement with baffles made out of whoknowswhat and glued with chewing gum. Even with an all in one aquarium you may want to re plumb it to ensure that it is quiet and reliable. ![]() On a bean animal if both the main siphon and the first trickle get clogged the 3rd pipe would be there. I believe the thought process is if your main siphon gets clogged the trickle overflow would take over. It is commonly referred to as the open channel. The second pipe acts very similar to a Durso because it is vented with an air hole preventing that pipe from being a siphon and making it quiet. I directly drilled 4 holes in my 55 g, which exit the back wall to right angles down to the floor (Bean Animal + return). Many submersible pumps will have a 1/2 outlet, and as a general rule most people don’t use anything smaller than 3/4 plumbing for a return line. Ive used a Herbie for a couple of years now with no issues. The Bean design uses the same valve-controlled siphon drain as the Herbie setup. I'm back in the hobby 20 years later after failing miserably in my teens, and am finally stepping out from lurker status on a forum with a legitimate question! This is a big moment! ![]()
